Cheapest veggie on the block… Tau Gay a.k.a bean sprouts

I can buy a whole bag of these at NTUC

for just 30 cents! So it would cost even less at a wet market! How can farmers ever expect to earn any profit? Imagine the labor cost; the effort needed to harvest each tiny sprout. It seems crazy!

Then I did a bit of Googling and found out they are not so hard to grow after all! I imagined them being planted seed by seed in soil and gently plucked out with nimble fingers. Actually, the seeds are just stacked tray upon tray upon tray and watered every few hours, without soil, without arranging. They don’t even need sunlight and can be harvested in 3-4 days! You can watch it here:

No wonder they can be sold cheap! This dish probably costs about  30 cents with all the other ingredients added!

Tau gay (bean sprouts)
Shredded carrot
Ikan Billis
1 tsp chopped garlic
Few slices ginger
Spring onions (optional)

Seasoning
1 tbsp concentrated mushroom stock
1 tsp sugar
1/2 cup water

1) heat about 2tbsp of oil. Fry ikan billis till golden brown. Set aside.
2) add in garlic and ginger to the hot oil and fry till fragrant
3) add in bean sprouts, shredded carrot and spring onions. Toss and stir-fry till half cooked.
4) add in seasoning and bring to a boil. Simmer and serve.

Now, I wonder how they managed to clean the innards and de-shell all those tiny ikan billis and dried shrimp…
