First Homemade Bolster Case
B casually mentioned that our sewing machine was turning into another one of my Ban Mian Makers (a very unfunny joke he cracks every time some big discount-item I purchase gets buried in the White Elephant Graveyard.)
To prove him wrong, I decided that I would make the bolster cases. How hard could that be??
It didn’t take long…
15 mins to inspect her original bolster case and figure out how they put it together
15 mins to choose and unchoose, choose and unchoose and choose the right cloths
10 mins to read the sewing machine instructions on how to thread the needle
10 mins to thread the needle
15 mins to cut out the cloth into the right shapes
10 mins to figure out why my stitches were so loose
10 mins to unpick the loose stitches and start all over
10 mins to discover I had sewn the cloth on the wrong side
10 mins to unpick and start all over
15 mins to sew the main body
20 mins to thread the elastic into their loops
10 mins to cut away loose thread
15 mins to read the sewing machine instructions on how to sew end seams
15 mins to experiment on the end seams and discard the first bolster case after the seams went haywire.
Actually, it didn’t look THAT bad… Right?
Oops. That’s the insides. Okok. I know it won’t survive the washing machine. TEHHH!!(REJECTED).
10 mins to mourn over Bolster Case #1 and tell myself I can still recycle the cloth to make five-stones cases
15 mins to cut new cloth into the right shapes
5 mins to sew the main body halfway before the thread gets entangled in the bobbin holder
5 mins to realise I’m out of bobbin thread
10 mins to read the sewing machine instructions on how to thread the bobbin
10 mins to thread the bobbin
10 mins to figure out how to put the bobbin case back into the machine
10 mins to ask B for help on how to interpret the diagram and fix the bobbin case
15 mins to sew the main body
20 mins to sew the end seams
15 mins to thread the elastic into their loops
30 mins to celebrate the completion of my first successful bolster case and show-off to B
15 mins to cut new cloth into the right shapes

Approx 6 hours 55 min for two bolster cases and one reject.
And 10 hrs to down two Panadols and recover from a splitting headache.
Not bad, considering I dread sewing and it’s my first time.
(I’m feeling very proud of myself now. Please don’t ask me why one case is so skinny and deformed.)
Will have to make Little B’s pillow soon… I guess it’s worth it, seeing how she adores her little Baobaos (as her bolsters are affectionately named).
Sure, baby, but let’s just give it a few more days before I touch that machine again, shall we?
