Live Baby Fry

I bought a number of Mickey Mouse Platys to add to our fish tank…

Among them, one was pregnant! It definitely wasn’t my intention to get a pregnant platy! But I somehow have this weird knack of ending up with pregnant plats everytime I buy them… Once, I had two pregnant at the same time, and ended up with 90 baby fry! Thankfully, my sis and bro+sis-in-law kindly took some back, in little glass jars…

Coral Platy with baby fry (taken last year)…

I kinda feel bad though, cos they ended up buying a whole aquarium kit and gadgetry, especially my sis, just to rear the little fry!:P Now my sis has this huge gorgeous tank of fish that looks just like a beautiful mini rainforest ecosystem…! It is crazy amazing.. haha..

I initially got the platys, not as decorative fish, but just to eat any mosquito larvae in a pot of water lilies in the yard.. Over time, the water lily died, but the fish remained… and so my population of platys grew…

Back to this mommy fish. I noticed she had dropped a few little fry not long after I released her into her new home… I managed to save one from the main tank, but the rest were quickly discovered by the rest of the gang!

Quickly transferred into ‘Maternity Ward’, with lots of frilly aquatic plants for interior deco…

I somehow really like this pic, because of the kaleidoscopic ceiling lights reflected on the fish bowl and the mysterious pinkish background (which upon scrutiny, I realise is the base of my kids’ pet ants box (Yes, pet ants. I’ll save that for another time)

The plants are not there for aesthetic purposes alone, but for the fry to hide! Platys are livebearers, known to be rather apathetic to even their own babies… The simple equation in their brain? ANY FL0AT1NG BL0B = F00D

I tried to catch her in action while she’s giving birth, but she’s just too quick!

So here they are… DRUMROLLLLLL…. the new born babes….!!!

They like resting on rocks…
So tiny!
Playing Hide-and-Don’t-Seek with Mommy…
Spot us if you can!
Bolder siblings…
They’re stronger here, two days after birth..

They keep surfacing for air though.. Going to get a bigger tank later, as my air pump is currently too big to fit in this wee bowl! For now, ciao!

To be continued…
